The Canadian government took plans to replace the navy's ageing replenishment oilers out of mothballs this summer, announcing the comeback of a previously sunken dreamboat, the Joint Support Ship (JSS). Government timelines indicate a winning design for the new class of supply vessels could be chosen before the end of 2011 through the newly unveiled National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy. Despite the promise of a fast-paced procurement schedule, concerns still linger within the defence community about further possible delays that the navy can't afford. A great deal of time has already been wasted getting a contract going for replacement replenishment vessels. It's been more than a decade since the navy retired its first auxiliary oiler replenishment (AOR) vessel, the HMCS Provider, after 35 years in service. Her sister ships, HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Preserver, have now each served more than 40 years at sea.
